What's so special about this South African Tea?

Rooibos contains several antioxidants such as vitamin C, as well as calcium and iron. When drunk, the tea is a mild relaxant. Rooibos is caffeine free so is therefore suitable for drinking before going to sleep. It also helps with various complaints such as hay fever, asthma, allergies, stomach problems, acne and eczema. In South Africa cold rooibos tea is given to babies when they have problems with colic.

Rooibos – aka red bush – is a plant belonging to the legume family (Leguminosae). The plant grows wild in the surroundings of the Cederberg in South Africa. Since 1930 the plant has also been cultivated for the manufacturing of a tea-like drink. The leaves are plucked, pressed and laid in the sun to oxidise. The rooibos gets its reddish brown colour during the last phase. Rooibos has no caffeine and almost no tannin, which otherwise often gives tea its slightly bitter taste.
